The Journey to the Perfect Laundry Pedestal: Part 1

Introduction

Right before the 2020 pandemic, I found myself longing for pedestals to accompany our front load washer and dryer. These machines had always been our preference due to their water efficiency, gentle treatment of our clothes, and the added benefit of drier garments from the spin cycle. However, the chore of loading and unloading became a less-than-pleasant task, requiring excessive bending compared to a top load machine.  With the demands of parenting and limited time, constantly bending down to pick up toys or carry our then only child became a strain on my back.  

The Quest for an Alternative

When it came to pedestals, I was reluctant to invest in expensive options from big brands. Their drawers seemed impractical, as they couldn't accommodate most of our detergent bottles. Placing heavy detergent in a drawer defeated the purpose of having a pedestal to reduce bending. I preferred keeping our detergent on top of the washer, where pouring it directly into the dispenser made the most sense.

My wife and I were already proud parents of a two-year-old daughter, with our second child—a baby boy—on the way. Both of us were working professionals leading active lives, and taking care of a child meant facing numerous laundry loads each week. The need for a convenient and efficient laundry solution became increasingly apparent.

The DIY Misadventure

Online, I came across various DIY pedestal ideas. These tutorials painted a picture of a simple construction using wooden pieces tightly screwed together. The affordability and simplicity of the DIY approach appealed to me, and I believed I could complete the project in a weekend.

As I delved deeper into the project, I soon realized that finding the right DIY solution was not as easy as it seemed. Gathering supplies from the home improvement store proved to be a task in itself. Although the raw materials were cheaper than buying a ready-made pedestal, the costs were not as low as initially anticipated. Additionally, my limited carpentry skills and subpar tools compromised the quality of my work. The DIY pedestal I managed to assemble was crooked, unappealing, and far from the polished creations showcased in the online tutorials. The disappointing outcome left me disheartened, lacking motivation to finish and paint the flawed pedestal. It felt like a complete defeat, and I found myself back at square one.

Desperation and New Discoveries

Desperate for a solution, I turned to the internet once again in the hopes of stumbling upon an inexpensive alternative. That's when I came across some universal laundry pedestals on Amazon. Although attractively priced, they were too small and flimsy for our needs. It became evident that these pedestals were designed for compact laundry machines commonly found in foreign countries or small living spaces like apartments. They simply wouldn't work for our standard-sized 27-inch wide washing machines in the USA.

As the arrival of our baby drew nearer, I felt a sense of defeat. I considered reverting to the idea of purchasing big brand pedestals or even searching for pre-owned ones, but the chances of finding a match seemed like a mere hope and prayer. I shared my struggles with my wife, expressing my frustration over the limited options available for affordable laundry pedestals.

To my surprise, she not only empathized with my predicament but also offered a brilliant suggestion. Drawing from her own experience and understanding the need we faced, she proposed that I develop my own product to fill this gap in the market. It was an idea that resonated deeply with me, as I realized there were likely many others out there facing the same challenges.
